MICHAEL GEORGIAN SUBURBIA

‘Suburbia’ is Michael Georgian’s second release with Strong Island Recordings. It’s an exciting, nostalgic track filled with retro drum machines and incredible analogue synthesisers that sound warm and inviting from the get-go. His heavily-edited, distant lead vocal feels like they’ve been plucked straight out of the 80s, but the subtle chaos of the chorus leads us down a different, much more modern path. The grit of those slowly developing synth sounds is intense, with the sudden change of vibe in the drum machine adding something almost dystopian to proceedings. “The single is a lamentation on the engulfing sense of doom felt across small-town England,” he says. “Impossible to ignore but impossible to escape.” It’s Tubeway Army and Kraftwerk had a child with Throbbing Gristle and The Orb. -Dan Peeke.
